The institute covers the following functions:

• Medical care, namely diagnosis and treatment of respiratory conditions
• University medical teaching (as affiliation to the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest) for Romanian and international students, resident physicians and other post graduates
• Medical research; the institute has its own research department consisting of 20 dedicated researchers involved in epidemiological studies, bronchoscopy, broncho-alveolar lavage, complex lung function testing, respiratory microbiology
• Headquarter of several national healthcare programs: e.g. tuberculosis control, smoking cessation, pulmonary hypertension
• Headquarter of the Romanian Society of Pneumology, coordinating the scientific activity (incl. national and international conferences, symposia) of the pneumologists all over the country (over 500 members).

MDR TB Department  

• MDR TB Department - opened in 2005 as part of a Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria grant, providing 50 beds for MDR TB patients (separate positive smear from negative smear MDR TB)
• Medical staff - 23 persons, among 2 physicians: Dr. Victor Spinu and dr. Cristina Popa
